INFORMATION FOR ACEC MEMBERS:

As many of you are aware, The American Consulting Engineers Council has for many years offered an extensive employee benefits program for member companies. Access to information and competitive quotations has been difficult for member organizations in Maine to obtain.

Effective immediately, Homewood Benefits of Yarmouth, Maine will be representing ACEC in the marketing of the ACEC Life/Health Trust Plans throughout Maine and Northern New England. Homewood Benefits is a local Brokerage and Consulting firm serving medium and large employers throughout New England. We will be available to assist any member organizations who may be looking for cost efficient benefits options made available through ACEC.

ACEC Life/Health Trust Plans offer a series of Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) medical plans with deductibles ranging from $250 per person up to $2,500 per person. Incentives are given to employees and their dependents who choose a participating provider. Additionally, ACEC offers dental coverage, group term life and AD&D insurance, as well as short and long term disability protection. All coverages may be administered on one simple bill.

The concept of an Association Group Plan or Multiple Employer Trust plan is simple: Use the group buying power of a large organization to reduce "frictional" costs, and make more comprehensive benefits available to smaller organizations. On April 22, 2003, Senator Olympia Snowe and Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao conducted a round table discussion in Portland on "Association Health Plans", based on a Bush administration proposal. This "innovative" idea is the basis of the ACEC program which has been in force for almost forty years.

What sets the ACEC Life/Health Trust Plans apart are two unique characteristics:

1. Type of Employees - Generally, the members of consulting engineering firms are younger, highly educated white collar workers who are low risk for abusing or over-using health benefits. As a result, the ACEC Trust has experienced lower medical inflation than the healthcare industry in general. This favorable experience has resulted in lower premiums from year to year.
2. Age of Plan - The ACEC Life/Health Trust has been in existence for many years. Because there are over 30,000 insured employees nationwide, the trust has been very stable. While recent changes in the healthcare industry have had some impact on costs, the sheer size of the trust has enabled ACEC to weather the storm.

As of 8/1/07, the ACEC LHIT has contracted with UnitedHealthcare as its official national health care insurer.  Member firms will have the opportunity to join the many companies who have improved their bottom line by choosing the health care company, UnitedHealthcare.
